My baby boy is 18 months old today! How?! And I guess, as much as I want to deny it, he technically is a babe no more and is in full blown toddler status; but he will always always be my baby boy in my eyes. Always and forever. I remember reading my friend Laurie‘s post of her Dom turning 18 months and the struggle of letting them NOT be babies anymore and it really hit home. I need to let go, and it is a hard thing to do. But he’s ready. He’s so ready.
It’s hard to believe we have had our sweet Joa boy with us for 18 months already but at the same time it’s hard to imagine life without him 🙂 Joaquim has been like a ray of sunshine to our family. He is such a HAPPY boy! Well, unless you take his precious remote from him. He is still obssseeeeesssed with the roku remote. And Mother Goose Club. We are working on “taking turns” with his sister picking shows but he is not a fan.
Other big likes right now are: being outside, playing/taunting our Australian Shepherd Lola. Throwing food down from your highchair for Lola to eat, trucks and cars, throwing any kind of ball, running around like a mad man, and chasing his big sister around. He is her shadow and it is adorable. He also loves walking up and down the stairs holding Mommy’s hand, ANYTHING to do with water, climbing on top of the ottoman or couch and standing (or running!) which just about gives Mommy a heart attack, and stroller walks around the neighborhood.
Dislikes: Carbs. He is not a fan! This one surprised me as both Mike and I love carbs, a bit too much probably, and well don’t most people? But not this guy. Getting in the car seat, you’d think I was torturing him, same with diaper changes, although I have discovered giving him a toy to hold helps. Joaquim is also very independent and wants to learn how to do things on his own so he does NOT like it when you try to help him figure out a new toy or help him in his climbing.
Eating: Overall Joa is a good eater but he can be picky. He eats a good amount of what he is in the mood for but what he is in the mood for can vary. One day he likes something , the next he screams at the sight of it. It has been….interesting to say the least. One thing that is always a hit is string cheese. Like the good Wisconsin boy he is. 🙂 Milk is still the favorite beverage and he drinks A LOT of it.
Sleeping: I am nervous to write about this as I do not want to jinx myself; but man are you doing well in this department. Now a days you even ask to go to bed at times! If you get fussy at bed time it usually only lasts a minute or two and then you get into your books and all is well again. Usually, we go upstairs, change your diaper, read you a couple books, you snuggle for maybe 5 mins and then point to your crib to go to bed for the night! Counting my lucky stars here and praying this trend continues!
Communication: When did you start full flown communicating with us? It was like all of a sudden I understand when you are telling me you want to go downstairs, or you take my hand and start walking upstairs if you need a diaper change?! or you understand when I ask you where your shoes or your “baba” are. This is one of my favorite parts of this stage. The outflow of communication, it just happens. Just like that they start saying words each day and understanding more words, and you understand them more and its just amazing isnt it?
You are still very affectionate and love to run up to your family members and tackle them with a big hug or give a big kiss. Please dont let that change! You also know when you’ve hurt someone on accident and will try to say “sorry” and give gentle pats on the shoulder. It is too cute!
We have loved watching you grow Joaquim you are such a blessing to all those you meet, keep on spreading that sunshine baby boy! I mean, you Tot, you 🙂 Love you to the moon and back!
