Fun Winter Craft: Homemade Bird Feeders

I’m pretty sure the idea of this craft came from this scene from Friends which, if you know me, you know is one of my all time favorite shows!

I was trying to think of a fun winter craft to do with Mia for our Winter Bucket ListΒ and that scene just popped in my head. I mean Joey is a lot like a 3 year old isn’t he? It was the easiest thing to do and Mia had a blast every minute of it!

First get some pine cones. You can make this a fun activity on it’s own and go on a family hike to get them! If you do, bake the bugs out of them before using! Β Since it was already so cold here in WI and I had my old cinnamon scented pine cones just sitting around ( I treated myself to a new bag this year πŸ™‚ ) I just recycled them into this little project.

Then scoop some peanut putter into one small bowl and some birdseed in another. We got out birdseed at Stein’s. Β You will also need a spatula and some newspaper.

Line your table with the newspaper and set down the pine cones and other items.

Take one pine cone andΒ “paint” peanut butter all over coating it thoroughly.

Next sprinkle birdseed over the peanut butter. You can also pour some birdseed out onto the newpaper and roll the pinecone in it. The latter is more efficient but sprinkling is more fun πŸ™‚

This morning we put the feedersΒ out on the patio, you could also tie some string to it and hang it from a tree! Now we wait and see if our feathered friends like our little surprise for them! It’ll be fun to keep checking out the window with my Mia and see if there are any little guys out there each morning!
